HONG KONG - The man believed to have murdered a woman in the Wellington suburb of Miramar has been found dead in Hong Kong.
New Zealand police officially named the victim Irene Katsougiannis, 62, after a thorough autopsy.
The harrowing incident occurred when Katsougiannis was found lifeless at her Totara Road residence in Miramar just after 2 p.m. on October 16. A friend who was worried about her health visited her home, leading to the grim discovery. Police rushed to the scene and launched a homicide investigation.
The ongoing investigation is progressing well and on-site inspections are expected to conclude over the weekend. It has been revealed that the Wellington mother-of-three is believed to have been the victim of her son, who died in Hong Kong on the same day her mother's body was found.
Her son Soteri Katsougiannis reportedly lived with her at the property and is suspected of being responsible for her tragic death.
Irene Katsougiannis is Wellington's Netball coach and founder of the 2014 Olympic Netball Club. Community Director Sue Geale described Irene as a kind-hearted and dedicated person who was always working to benefit the community. The Netball Club is like a big family to her and she warmly welcomes them into her home.
The man believed to have caused Erin's death was a man she knew who left New Zealand and later died in Hong Kong, where police have launched an investigation. Erin's sudden death has deeply impacted Wellington Netball as she left a lasting legacy not only as a coach but also as a central figure at the Olympic Club.
Coincidentally, at about 2 pm on Monday (November 16), a foreign male in his 30s fell from a height at 29-31 Chatham Road North, Tsim Sha Tsui and hit the front of a taxi. The impact shattered the windshield and caused severe damage and deformation to the roof. The victim suffered severe head injuries and fractured limbs scattered in the car.
The taxi driver was also injured. They immediately rushed him to the hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that the victim succumbed to his injuries. It is unclear whether the deceased is a New Zealand suspect as the nationality of the deceased was not disclosed. While the man's identity has not been revealed, it is understood he was taken to hospital before his death.
Notably, Katsougiannis’ husband passed away in 2017, adding another layer of sadness to this devastating event.
