HK Streets Turn Into Gold Mines: Around HK$1 Billion in Fines for Over 8,200 Parking Tickets in 2023




According to the latest report, a staggering number of over 8,200 parking tickets were issued daily in 2023, resulting in fines amounting to around HK$1 billion. This influx of fines has contributed significantly to the government reserves.

The police revealed that a total of 3.01 million illegal parking tickets were issued throughout the year 2023. On average, over 8,240 tickets were handed out daily, reflecting the severity of the issue. These fines collectively brought in HK$964 million, bolstering the government's financial resources.



Comparing the figures to the previous year, there was a decrease of 350,452 tickets issued in 2023. This reduction resulted in the government receiving HK$112 million less in fines during the year. Each ticket carried a minimum fine of HK$320.


Electronic means accounted for the majority of ticket issuances, with over 2.95 million tickets being issued through this method. This electronic system constituted approximately 98 percent of the total number of tickets issued.


The government has acknowledged the need to review the current fine structure for traffic offenses. Factors such as inflation rates and their impact on deterrence will be taken into consideration during the review process.
