In a recent incident in Ma On Shan, a middle-aged man identified as Mr. Chung found himself in a perilous situation after getting disoriented while paragliding in dense fog at Ngong Ping Plateau. The incident was reported by Mr. Chung himself at 7:10 am this morning, stating that he had been stranded overnight in a forested area. Promptly, authorities initiated a search and rescue operation involving firefighters, paramedics, and the Aviation Services team.

The rescue efforts took place near Wong Chuk Shan New Village, along Wong Kong Ao Road, opposite North Port in Sai Kung. A helicopter from the Aviation Services team was deployed to comb the area and search for any signs of the stranded paraglider. Fortunately, they spotted the parachute in the vicinity of Admiralty, which prompted the rescue team to notify the firefighters and safely bring Mr. Chung down the mountain.
Upon examination, it was determined that Mr. Chung had miraculously escaped major injuries. He left the scene on his own accord after receiving medical clearance. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Chung, a retired English teacher with over a year of paragliding experience, had planned to go paragliding in Ma On Shan with a friend. However, due to the heavy fog, his friend decided to cancel the plan. Undeterred, Mr. Chung proceeded with the flight alone around 3 pm. Unfortunately, he became disoriented and lost his way upon landing in the dense forest.
Despite relying on his mobile phone's GPS system and the "HKSOS" application, both failed to accurately pinpoint his location. As a result, he had no choice but to spend the night in the unfamiliar surroundings, searching for a way out at daybreak. Eventually, he managed to catch a faint signal on his phone, allowing him to report the incident and seek assistance.
Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Chung candidly admitted that the weather conditions were not suitable for flying. He acknowledged that he should have heeded the advice of his friend and fellow paragliders. Mr. Chung described his struggle with impaired visibility caused by the thick fog, which made it impossible for him to retrace his flight path. Ultimately, he made an emergency landing in a grassy area halfway up the mountain but found himself trapped with no immediate help in sight. Despite the challenging circumstances, he maintained composure, sought shelter near a large tree, and prayed for divine protection throughout the night.
The successful rescue operation serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and exercising caution when engaging in adventurous activities. Authorities and rescue teams play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of individuals involved in such incidents.
