Hong Kong, August 6, 2024 - The annual Perseids meteor shower is set to reach its peak on August 12, 2024. According to the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Perseids' active period runs from July 17 to August 24, with the night of August 12 marking the shower's climax.
Hong Kong is expected to have favorable viewing conditions for the Perseids, which the Space Museum says is the second-most active meteor shower of the year in the city. To help stargazers make the most of this celestial event, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has recommended three prime observation spots with minimal light pollution:
1. Sunset Peak
2. Tai Mo Shan
3. Tai Hang Tun
During the peak period, the Perseids are forecast to produce up to 100 meteors per hour at their zenith. The shower's radiant point will rise in the northeastern sky around 10 PM, and as it climbs higher, the number of visible meteors is expected to increase.
The peak night of August 12 will coincide with the waning crescent moon, which is set to set around 11:30 PM. The Tourism Board advises stargazers to observe the Perseids between 11 PM and 5 AM for the best results, noting that remote areas of Hong Kong could yield over 10 meteors per hour at the peak.
The Hong Kong Space Museum will also provide a live stream of the Perseids on the peak night, offering real-time commentary and insights on meteor shower viewing. While the peak night offers the highest concentration of meteors, the days immediately before and after are also suitable for observation, as long as weather conditions are favorable.
