MANILA - The Philippine military called on China to stop its "unsafe actions" in the South China Sea late last week after a Chinese naval vessel followed and attempted to intercept a Philippine Navy ship on a resupply mission.

According to reports, a Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy ship came as close as 350 yards (320 meters) as it tried to cross in front of a Philippine vessel near Thitu Island, the largest and most strategic outpost in the South China Sea from Manila. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Romeo Brawner.

Brauner said in a statement on Sunday (October 15): "These dangerous and offensive maneuvers by the Chinese navy not only risk a collision, but also directly endanger the lives of personnel at sea on both sides."

The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

This is the latest in a series of Chinese attempts to monitor and block Philippine personnel resupply missions into the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone in the South China Sea occupied by Manila.

China claims almost all of the South China Sea, through which more than US$3 trillion (S$4.11 trillion) of trade passes annually.

Relations between Manila and Beijing have soured since Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos sought closer ties with Washington, including increasing U.S. access to more Philippine military bases.
