A 48-year-old man, known as the "Temple Street Leader" for his gang activities in the Jordan area, and 34 of his alleged followers have been detained on suspicion of illegal assembly, according to people familiar with the matter.

All 35 suspects remained in custody for questioning as of Wednesday afternoon. After 34 suspected triad members headed by Temple Street Long rushed into the Canton Road office in Tsim Sha Tsui, the police were alerted at about 5:30 pm on Tuesday.
"The investigation found that the gang went there to collect HK$19 million lost by their clients investing in stocks through the company," the source said.
All 35 suspects were in the more than 1,000-square-foot office when officers arrived, according to police. "They occupied every corner of the office. Although no weapons were produced during the incident, the head of the company was not allowed to leave the office," the source said.
He said the gang was awaiting the arrival of their client, who had made payments to Temple Street Long to collect the money. The client did not turn up after apparently learning that police were on the scene.
Police arrested the 35 men for unlawful assembly - an offense punishable by up to five years in prison under the Public Order Ordinance. Officers from the Yau Tsim Fighting Crime Squad are following up the case.
Temple Street Long is believed to be one of two current leaders of Wo Shing Wo, which holds elections every two years to choose its main boss. According to sources, his gang is accused of operating drug dens, gambling establishments and brothels, and engaged in loan sharking and debt collection activities mainly in the Yau Ma Tei area.

From January to March this year, the police received a total of 503 gang-related reports, an increase of 69.9% over the 296 cases in the same period last year.
