Hong Kong police have arrested a man who was alleged of animal cruelty following a post on social media that revealed a cat being ill-treated.
The circulating online post showing a man allegedly attacking a cat using bare hands has instigated a police investigation into the incident.
The incident that happened on last Friday involved a 37-year-old man on the second floor of the Lucky Plaza private housing estate in Sha Tin, the report said.
A source familiar with the case as it was reported said on Tuesday that a woman passing by when the incident happened heard a cat screaming and saw a man pulling its fur. The woman added that the man immediately ran away when she shouted at him to stop the ill-treating the cat.
Following the result from CCTV camera, police arrested the offender on Monday at a public housing flat on Lek Yuen Estate in Sha Tin.
The report said the cat believed to belong to the stallholder at a nearby market and did not seem to have any serious injuries.
The offender was said to be jobless and has been detained on suspicion of animal cruelty.
Animal cruelty in Hong Kong is punishable by up to three years in jail and a HK$200,000 fine under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance.
