Hong Kong residents have been urged by the security minister to " get along with one another" in the wake of the latest sequence of brutal killings and surge in crime in the city and therefore assure the public that police will deploy more manpower for "high-profile" patrols in the crowded places of the city.

Chris Tang Ping-keung, the secretary for security as well admitted the safety worries in the latest crime rates in the past week, pledging that officers would respond speedily to emergencies with more visible patrols.

Tang said on a recent radio programme that, "we will mobilise more manpower to carry out patrols on the frontlines by simplifying backend operations".

The force’s Emergency Unit would also step up patrols with vehicles equipped with protective gear such as shields, he said, adding that more auxiliary officers would also be deployed.

Tang continued that he knows citizens’ concerns and urged them to care for their friends and families to help alleviate their stress or reach out for help.

The security chief noted that the overall crime number stood at 20,584 in the first quarter of this year, up 6,718 or 48.4 per cent compared with last year’s data.
