At least 10 people were killed when a small private plane crashed into a motorcycle and a car as it tried to land at an airport on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian officials said on Thursday (Aug 17).
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told reporters that at 2:08 p.m., a light private business jet, a Beechcraft Model 390 (Premier 1), crashed near the town of Elmina. It was preparing to land with 6 passengers and 2 crew members on board.
He said the plane lost contact with the air traffic control tower and hit a motorcycle and a car on the highway.
"There was no emergency call and the plane was cleared to land," Hussein Omar said.
Search and rescue missions are underway.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAAM) said the flight took off from the resort island of Langkawi and was bound for Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport near the Selangor state capital Kuala Lumpur.
CAAM chief executive officer Norazman Mahmud said the aircraft first made contact with the Subang air traffic control tower at 2.47pm and was granted landing clearance at 2.48pm.
"At 2.51pm, the Subang air traffic control tower observed smoke rising from the crash site, but the aircraft did not issue a distress call," he said in a statement.
CAAM said the flight was operated by Malaysian private jet services company Jet Valet Sdn Bhd.
Jet Valet did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, but local media quoted the company as saying it would cooperate with authorities in the investigation.
