Dozens of concerned citizens gathered outside the Japanese Consulate in Hong Kong today in a strong protest against the Japanese government's planned discharge of nuclear wastewater.
The group demanded an immediate halt to the controversial project, which sparked outrage among petitioners and prompted calls for a boycott of Japanese goods and avoiding travel to Japan.
At around 11 am, a group of protesters set off from the MTR Central Station to express their opposition to the entrance of the consulate.
In a symbolic act of defiance, they tore down a banner bearing the Japanese flag and slogans and depicting the face of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Demonstrators also submitted a petition to the consulate, but there was no official representative to receive it. Undeterred, they taped the letter to the glass door and the protest ended about half an hour later.
Among those taking part in the demonstration was Mr. Chao, who strongly criticized Japan's decision to continue processing nuclear wastewater. He called for the program to be terminated immediately and questioned why Japan was so stubbornly pursuing ocean discharges despite widespread international opposition.
Mr. Chao also called on Hong Kong residents to join the movement to boycott Japanese goods and not go to Japan.
