Somali Pirates Demand Ransom for Chinese Fishing Vessel

Somali pirates have hijacked a Chinese fishing boat and are demanding a ransom for its release, along with the 18 crew members on board. The exact timing of the hijacking is unclear, but the incident has drawn attention from the European Union's anti-piracy force.

Mohamed Dini, a police officer in Eyl—a known pirate stronghold—reported that the pirates are moving the vessel along the coast in search of a safe haven. Initial reports indicate that the hijackers were contracted to provide protection but later became reinforced by other pirates. They have now demanded payment for the ship's return.

A local elder, Ali Warsame, revealed that a Somali company attempted to offer a $300,000 ransom, which the pirates rejected. Local fishermen noted that the vessel approached Eyl recently but was forced back into open waters due to concerns about Puntland’s coast guards. The pirates, however, are wary of moving further out to sea because of the presence of foreign military ships.

The EU’s anti-piracy naval force, Atalanta, is monitoring the situation, classifying it as armed robbery at sea. Fortunately, the crew remains unharmed.

This incident marks a resurgence in Somali piracy after a period of relative calm. Earlier this year, pirates hijacked a Bangladeshi cargo ship, which was later freed after a substantial ransom was paid. Recent developments raise alarms about a potential increase in piracy activities in the Indian Ocean, as opportunistic pirates exploit the security gaps following the withdrawal of international forces.
