This drop in temperature is attributed to a powerful winter monsoon that has enveloped the Guangdong province with its icy grip. The Observatory predicts that the cold air mass, responsible for the plummeting temperatures, will continue to move southwards, bringing along a cloud band that currently covers the coastal areas of Southern China.

As of 9:50 PM, temperatures in various parts of Hong Kong remained below 10 degrees Celsius, with Tai Mo Shan experiencing a further drop to -0.4 degrees. In response to this unexpected chill, the Observatory has revised its forecast for Tuesday, lowering the expected low temperature from 7 degrees to 6 degrees.

The cold snap is a result of a strong winter monsoon wind pattern, which has brought severe cold to Guangdong. Temperatures across many parts of Hong Kong tonight are approximately ten degrees lower than the previous day. Tomorrow, sporadic rain showers are predicted, and there is a possibility of icing conditions on elevated and exposed high ground.

Tonight and the following day are expected to be very cold, with cloudy to overcast skies and a few rain patches. Urban temperatures will sharply decline from around 10 degrees to a forecasted minimum of around 6 degrees, while the New Territories will experience even colder conditions. Strong northerly winds are expected offshore and on high ground, adding to the wintry feel.

Looking ahead, Hong Kong can expect the cold spell to continue into Wednesday and Thursday morning, with low temperatures persisting throughout the day. Mornings and nights will remain cool as the monsoon gradually moderates. However, winter is not yet over, as an upper-air disturbance is forecasted to bring unsettled weather to Southern China early next week.
