There was a High Court hearing on Wednesday about the 42-year-old woman, Leung Ka-yi, a secretary who threw her 16-day-old baby off a bridge on the 4th of March, 2022. Leung was admitted to one count of killing her two weeks old baby and would be sentenced on the 5th of July.
In respect to the case given in the court, she explained that the newborn mom-baby routine that was combined with postpartum depression after the baby's arrival prompted her into confusion and anxiety. She expressed her plight to friends and family who gave her advice and the courage to stay positive. She told her spouse before the incident that she was having the feeling to kill herself or their newborn daughter in which he thereafter comforted her.
However, Leung eventually lost her control, sneaked out with her baby on the 4th of March, 2022 early morning, went toward a pedestrian bridge opposite Phase 3 of Sea Crest Villa on Castle Peak Road close to where she lives and threw the baby off the bridge from the height of 7.5m, as it was explained. She called the police for help after reporting the incident herself. But the baby could not make it after all the efforts in the hospital.
Leung was admitted to a Psychiatric hospital after the incident and the reports of her mental state revealed that she was yet to be recovered from postpartum depression after childbirth. She has been hospitalized in the Siu Lam Psychiatric Center since then.
The judge said in the court that the case was unfortunate and stipulated that if the rehabilitation report is positive, there is a likelihood that Leung will be given a suspended sentence.
The sentence was adjourned to the 5th of July.
