The mother of twin brothers arrested after police found them injured with 2cm cuts in the abdomen

Hong Kong police arrested on Thursday (5th October 2023),  a 53-year-old woman on suspicion of injuring her 20-year-old twin sons.

Police said that the three, mother and her two twin brothers were found injured with 2cm cuts on both abdomens at their flat in Wong Tai Sin after their father called emergency services at around 8:43.m

The twins who were said to be around 20 years old found conscious after the incident and taken to the hospital for treatment.

It was learnt from the reports that the twin brothers have intellectual disabilities and the mother has a history of mental illness.s

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun said he's very worried about the incident.

He said the twins had been staying in a care home and given two years extension to stay under care but eventually returned home to stay with their parents in July, this year.

"We understand that this family is under pressure to look after the twins. The Social Welfare Department has been arranging for the twins to be placed in a day centre, which is also a care home, as we hope to offer different care options to help this family. The department has also contacted the twins' father to offer emotional support."

According to DAB lawmaker Stanley Li, several recent events have highlighted the need to identify and support what he called "hidden carers". He called on the government to conduct more outreach visits.

"If we look into the tragedies involving caregivers in the past two to three years, most of them have been hidden carers who have not been followed by or recognised by the government's Social Welfare Department or social workers from other welfare organisations. These hidden carers endure immense pressure and lack support," said Li.

警方表示，三人的母親和她的兩個雙胞胎兄弟在他們位於黃大仙的公寓裡被發現受傷，腹部有2厘米深的傷口，他們的父親於上午8點43分左右撥打了緊急電話。

據稱，這對大約20歲的雙胞胎在事件發生後意識清醒，並被送往醫院接受治療。

從報道中獲悉，雙胞胎兄弟有智力障礙，母親有精神病史。

勞工及福利局局長孫克里斯表示，他對這事件非常擔心。

他說，這對雙胞胎一直住在療養院，並被延長了兩年的照顧時間，但最終在今年七月回家與父母住在一起。

「我們明白這個家庭面對照顧雙胞胎的壓力。社會福利署已安排雙胞胎入住日間中心，該中心也是護理院，希望提供不同的護理選擇，以幫助他們該部門還聯繫了雙胞胎的父親，以提供情感支持。”

民建聯議員李立柱表示，最近發生的幾起事件凸顯了識別和支持他所說的「隱藏照顧者」的必要性。 他呼籲政府進行更多的外展訪問。

「縱觀過去兩三年發生的涉及照顧者的悲劇，大部分都是隱性照顧者，沒有得到政府社會福利署或其他福利機構社工的關注和認可。這些隱性照顧者一直在忍受著苦難。壓力巨大，缺乏支持。」李說。
