Hong Kong police said on Thursday that the suspected burglar who was found unconscious with severe injuries at an isolated Ranch in Lantau may have fallen during a burglary.
The man from mainland China was found lying unconscious with severe head injuries on an abandoned mattress at the private pier of the Sea Ranch estate at about 4.30 am on Wednesday, police said.
He was rushed to St John Hospital on Cheung Chau but pronounced dead at about 6.30 am, the police spokesperson said.
The investigation by the police ascertained that five flats were broken into and HK$7,000 cash and two cartons of cigarettes were reported stolen.
The police spokesperson added that the investigators believed the man fell from height during the robbery with bloodstains, pieces of teeth and broken branches found on a ground-floor flat.
The report said that a screwdriver and as well as stocking that he used to cover his face from being identified were recovered by the officers.

The CCTV footage from one of the burgled residences revealed 3 men were acting together, leading to the Investigator's belief that they were linked to all five burglaries in the 20-block low-rise estate.
The police spokesperson said If needed, assistance would be sought from mainland police to search for the other two burglars.
The report concluded that the postmortem examination will be conducted on Friday to determine the cause of death.
