The two online platforms establishing fake brand-name mooncake sales have been discovered by the Customs.
Customs officers reported on Wednesday the seizure of 49 boxes of the Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes having a value of HK$16,000 and subsequently arrested three people whose ages fall between 28 and 51.
The Customs spokesperson, Senior Inspector Chow Lai-Man said the two counterfeit brands have a close resemblance with the original products sold by two famous companies in the city, but there's a way to confirm their originality.
"There is a laser sticker with a QR code printed on it for product authentication. Consumers can use the camera function in their smartphones to scan the QR code, which will then link them to a specific website to verify the authenticity of the product," she said.
"For the suspected counterfeit mooncakes, scanning the QR code will lead to a link to a counterfeit website. The layout of the counterfeit verification result is very different from that of the genuine product.”
She added that the controversial branded mooncakes are lower in price than the original ones. She emphasized that a government laboratory is presently testing the seized products to confirm their chance of containing any harmful substances.
