The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a Standby Signal No. 1 as Tropical Storm Yagi moves closer to the region. This signal indicates that the storm is within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong. As of midnight, Yagi was located about 590 kilometers southeast of the city, near the coordinates 18.8N, 118.4E. The storm is tracking west or west-northwest at approximately 10 kilometers per hour across the northern South China Sea.
While Yagi is expected to gradually intensify, it is forecasted to remain over 400 kilometers away from Hong Kong throughout the night and into the morning of September 4. Currently, strong winds from the storm have not yet affected the Pearl River Estuary area.
Additionally, the Amber Rainstorm Warning has been cancelled. However, a Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 12:30 a.m. tomorrow, as several thunderstorms are anticipated in the region. Residents are advised to exercise caution during this thunderstorm activity.
As the storm approaches the southern coast of China, local winds are expected to strengthen. The Observatory is monitoring the situation closely and may issue Strong Wind Signal No. 3 if Yagi continues to intensify and moves closer to Hong Kong. The potential for higher tropical cyclone warning signals will be assessed based on the storm's trajectory and the strength of associated gale winds near the Pearl River Estuary.
