It was a mixed emotions of joy and sadness when a Syrian newborn baby girl, whose mother died along with her husband and four other children were pulled out under the rubble. The rescue workers discovered them on Monday afternoon after 10 hours that the quake struck.

"The baby's umbilical cord was still connected to her mother, Afraa Abu Hadija when discovered," said Dr Afrin, of the nearby hospital where the baby is receiving treatment. We named her Aya, an Arabic name, meaning " a sign from God". The doctor also stated that Aya's condition is improving every day and there was no damage to her backbones as initially thought.

Monday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake had killed more than 21,000 people in South-eastern Turkey and northern Syria. However, unrelenting rescue efforts are still ongoing in both countries as the weather is getting harsher and days continue to count. Among many countries that have lately arrived for the joint mercy mission is the Hong Kong 59-strong team, including firefighters and medical practitioners.
