The two construction workers were found dead after suspicion of inhaling leaked toxic gas while doing underground MTR work on Saturday.

The two workers were said to be working on the replacement of cooling pipes for the air-conditioning system in the West Kowloon Cultural District when the incident happened.

Both who are said to be over sixty years of age were taken out by firefighters and police from a construction site along Austin Road at about 8 a.m. on Sunday. The emergency services found the two victims six metres below the ground, between the 100 and 200-metre mark of the pipe.

They were found unconscious and rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they were confirmed dead eventually.

The chief executive of the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, Siu Sin-man said the case was not acceptable. She said it was known that the two were repairing an MTR pipeline but the railway company should give a detailed explanation as soon as possible.

She said further "We think the incident is outrageous. There is no reason for sending two workers to work underground without considering their safety. How do they get out? There should be some procedures in place. If it is a confined space, sufficient protective gear should be provided".

The Labour Department said this fatal incident is now under investigation.

Also, MTR has said that the corporation is highly concerned about the incident and will launch an investigation.
