Typhoon Doksuri hit southern Taiwan after hitting the Philippines on Thursday, killing at least six people as the storm's high winds and rain triggered floods and landslides.

Village houses destroyed by Typhoon

The storm, which is classified as the second-strongest typhoon by Taiwan's weather bureau, was heading south of the Taiwan Strait Thursday morning with maximum winds of 191 kilometers (118 miles) per hour.

Doksuri has lost some strength since hitting the northern Philippine coastline on Wednesday, causing river banks to burst their banks, flooding low-lying villages and triggering dozens of landslides.

A mother, her child and two other children were killed when a landslide buried a house in the town of Buzias in Benguet province. In the nearby resort city of Baguio, a 17-year-old died when soil loosened by heavy rain buried his house, officials said.

On Thursday, Taiwan's weather bureau issued a wind and rain warning for southern Taiwan, including the main port city of Kaohsiung, where businesses and schools were closed and a landslide warning was issued.

All domestic flights on the island were suspended and a small number of international flights were cancelled. Rail services between southern and eastern Taiwan are closed.
