Unionists Demand Minimum Wage Increase to HK$55 in 'Labour Day Declaration'

The labor sector is advocating for an increase in the statutory minimum wage to HK$55 per hour, up from the current rate of HK$40. In the lead-up to this year's "Labor Day Declaration," lawmakers and unionists have put forward ten policy proposals, highlighting the need for enhanced labor protection and improved benefits.

Nine labor and civil service unions have jointly issued a "Labour Day Declaration" ahead of May 1, presenting ten recommendations aimed at urging the government to prioritize labor rights. Among the proposals, the chairman of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Trades Union Council, Lee Kwok-keung, emphasized the necessity of raising the minimum hourly wage by HK$15 to HK$55.

Lee Kwok-keung argued that the current minimum wage fails to cover even the cost of a basic meal, which can easily amount to HK$55. He stressed the urgency of rectifying this issue to ensure that workers can afford their basic needs.

In addition to the minimum wage hike, the unionists also called for an end to further labor imports and improvements in occupational safety. They suggested that the government should provide job-matching services for businesses participating in labor importation schemes, with the aim of prioritizing local workers. Furthermore, the unionists urged the government to strengthen inspections of construction projects to prevent industrial accidents and enhance labor protection for gig workers, such as food delivery personnel.

The unionists also highlighted the importance of ensuring the smooth implementation of the eMPF Platform in the coming year, as well as the abolition of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) offsetting arrangement. They emphasized the need to enhance vocational education and training opportunities as well.

By advocating for these measures, the labor sector aims to improve the overall well-being and working conditions of employees in Hong Kong.
