The US F-35 fighter jet disappeared on Sunday afternoon when the pilot was flying over the southern state of South Carolina.
The US military was left with no option but to ask the public's help to try to locate the missing fighter jet which cost around US$80 million after the incident.
The pilot survived, but the military was left with an expensive problem: it couldn’t find the jet, leading Joint Base Charleston to ask for help from residents.
“If you have any information that may help our recovery teams locate the F-35, please call the Base Defence Operations Centre,” a post from the base read on X, which used to be known as Twitter.
Base authorities said they were searching, in coordination with federal aviation regulators, around two lakes north of the city of Charleston.
It is not yet clear what happened, but officials said the aircraft was involved in a "mishap".
