The 63-year-old senator of the US state who was arrested in Hong Kong for possession of an unlicensed gun was granted a conditional discharge on Monday (30th of October, 2023).
The verdict was followed after the prosecutors stated the Republican senator's honesty for saying that he made a "horrible mistake".
Jeff Wilson was released by West Kowloon Court on a two-year bind-over order. Therefore, he was required to avoid committing further firearms offences in the city.
He could be fined HK$2,000 and sentenced again for the original transgression if he failed to follow the legal order, the Court said. The firearm was also confiscated.
The US republican senator was charged with possessing arms without a license after he was found with a revolver at Hong Kong airport on October 21.
Earlier, the state senator wrote on his official webpage that he did not know the unloaded gun was included in his baggage until he got to Hong Kong. He even professed that the gun was not discovered at the United States airport baggage screening.
Cherry Chong Man-yan, a senior public prosecutor, on Monday said the case was “rather straightforward” and noted the defendant had earlier confessed to customs officers that he had brought along the firearm by mistake.
“In the course of the investigation, he has made an admission openly… We also considered the fact that he is of clear record in Hong Kong,” Chong said in explaining the justice department’s decision.
Carrying a firearm without a license in Hong Kong is illegal and offenders can face up to HK$100,000 ($12,800) and a maximum of 14 years in prison.
