On April 8th, 2024, the Polar research vessel Xue Long 2 made its grand entrance at Sai Wan Ho, accompanied by several civilian vessels including Duk Ling, Aqua Luna, World Star, and five fishing boats organized by the Hong Kong Fishermen Consortium.
The arrival of Xue Long 2 was met with great excitement as government departments such as the Environmental Protection Department, Marine Department, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department, Customs and Excise Department, Correctional Services Department, Immigration Department, Marine Police, and two fireboats formed a massive fleet to guide and accompany the vessel as it entered Victoria Harbour through Lei Yue Mun.
To commemorate this special occasion, the Hong Kong government organized a welcome ceremony in Tsim Sha Tsui. Two tugboats and a fireboat created a majestic water arch, while the Flying Services Unit paid tribute with two helicopters flying low overhead.
At approximately 10 am, Xue Long 2 gracefully sailed into Victoria Harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui and is now docked at the Ocean Terminal. The captain, crew, and the onboard team warmly greeted the citizens who gathered on the pier to witness this historic event.
During its stay, the public will have a unique opportunity to board Xue Long 2, China's first domestically built polar research icebreaker. This visit is made possible through the invitation extended by the Green Future Foundation Association and the Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong.
Registration for the visit is now open, and in conjunction with the event, the Polar Research and Climate Change Exhibition will commence at the Hong Kong Science Museum on the following Monday and run until June 26th.
Ho Kin-chung, the founder of the Polar Research Institute, expressed his belief that Xue Long 2's arrival in Hong Kong, following China's 40th Antarctic expedition, will evoke a deep sense of recognition among the citizens. He further emphasized that the proposal for this visit was put forth last October, following the visit of Xue Long 1 twenty years ago. The proposal received overwhelming support from the government and various sectors.
Additionally, approximately 90 leading scientists on board Xue Long 2 will engage in exchanges with over 200 students during the visit, fostering valuable knowledge sharing and educational opportunities.
This visit by Xue Long 2 signifies a significant milestone in scientific research and further strengthens the bond between Hong Kong and the international polar research community. It is an event that promises to inspire and educate citizens about the importance of polar research and climate change.
An exciting drone performance scheduled for the evening of April 10th, which will add a captivating spectacle to this memorable visit by Xue Long 2 to the Ocean Terminal.
