A three-year-old girl lost her life in the hospital after the incident of the tram hitting her together with her six-year-old sister and their 66-year-old grandfather in Hong Kong's Western district on Thursday, the report said.
The younger one and her grandfather were stuck underneath the vehicle and later rescued by the emergency personnel, the report added.
Emergency services arrived at the scene after the distress calls, finding the three knocked down opposite the public swimming pool on Praya, Kennedy Town near the junction with Sai Cheung Street at around 10.44 am.
According to the source familiar with the case reported by the SCMP news, the two sisters, their grandfather and the family’s domestic helper, 34, were believed to have tried to cross the street while a red pedestrian traffic light was displayed at Kennedy Town’s Praya at the junction with Queen’s Road West, where they were hit by the eastbound tram.
Police said the young girl lost consciousness as she was being rescued, the older one was bleeding from her head while their grandfather sustained serious head injuries but was still conscious.
Afterwards, the three with their domestic helper were taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam where the three-year-old was confirmed dead.
The police did not mention whether the helper was also hit by the tram but said she had complained of pain in her waist.
Police said the officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic unit are investigating the cause of the accident.
