As the highly anticipated Hong Kong Marathon 2024 approaches, the local authorities have issued a comprehensive plan for traffic arrangements to ensure the smooth running of the event on Sunday, January 21st. To facilitate the marathon, major road closures and diversions will be implemented across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon West, and New Territories South.

The road closures and diversions will be carried out in phases throughout the duration of the marathon. The first phase will commence at 1:30 am and is expected to last until approximately 10:30 am. During this period, a section of the eastbound Island Eastern Corridor, from Victoria Park Road to Tung Hei Road slip road, will be closed to general traffic. In addition, slip roads from Hing Fat Street, Man Hong Street, and Taikoo Wan Road leading to the eastbound corridor will also be inaccessible. The eastbound Central-Wan Chai Bypass Tunnel is scheduled to reopen at around 1:30 pm.

Simultaneously, the second phase will begin and continue until approximately 11:30 am. This phase will involve the closure of the westbound Island Eastern Corridor, from Tung Hei Road to Victoria Park Road. Several slip roads leading to this corridor, including those from Nam On Street and Tai Hong Street, will also be shut down. The westbound Central-Wan Chai Bypass Tunnel will be closed during this time as well.

To mitigate the anticipated traffic disruptions, the police have established diversion routes. Traffic heading towards the eastbound Island Eastern Corridor and Eastern Harbour Crossing will be redirected through Gordon Road, Electric Road, and Java Road. Other diversions include rerouting traffic along Java Road and Man Hong Street via King's Road, as well as diverting vehicles from the Eastern Harbour Crossing through Tai On Street and Shau Kei Wan Road, among other alternative routes.

Residents and visitors are strongly advised to plan their travel accordingly and expect delays. Public transportation is expected to be busier than usual, with additional services deployed to accommodate the increased demand. These traffic arrangements have been put in place to facilitate the marathon while minimizing inconvenience to the general public and ensuring the safety of all participants and spectators.
