Hong Kong is bracing itself for an unusually cold March as temperatures are set to plummet to record lows not seen in six years. The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a forecast for a particularly cold morning tomorrow, with a significant drop in temperatures expected in the New Territories.

As the city welcomes the arrival of spring, residents are preparing for a spell of frigid weather. The Observatory has reported a chilly 14.1 degrees Celsius at its headquarters in the morning, marking an 8-degree decrease compared to the previous day. The cold snap is expected to persist, with urban areas experiencing a minimum temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius. In some regions of the New Territories, like Ta Kwu Ling, temperatures are predicted to drop as low as 8 degrees.

Tonight and tomorrow morning, the weather forecast predicts mainly cloudy and cold conditions, with the possibility of a few rain patches. Higher elevations should anticipate even lower temperatures. The expected high for tomorrow is unlikely to exceed 15 degrees Celsius. The Observatory advises that northerly winds, initially moderate to fresh in strength, may strengthen offshore before shifting to east to northeasterly winds by tomorrow night.

Although Sunday morning will continue to be cool, there is a gradual improvement in the outlook as temperatures are expected to rise over the following days. The weather pattern will bring an increase in relative humidity, leading to warmer conditions during the day.

The coastal areas of southern China, including Hong Kong, will remain under the influence of the northeast monsoon and an extensive cloud and rain band, resulting in cooler temperatures and sporadic rain. However, by Monday and Tuesday, the monsoon is expected to be replaced by a more humid southerly airstream, bringing mist over the Guangdong coast and warmer daytime temperatures.

It is worth noting that this respite may be short-lived, as another influx of the northeast monsoon is anticipated by mid to late next week, potentially causing a slight dip in regional temperatures once again.

Despite the chilly conditions, Hong Kong residents are preparing themselves for the coldest March in six years, taking necessary measures to stay warm and safe during this unusual weather event.
