Hong Kong Rice Dumpling Vendor Who Donated HK$15 Million to Education Passes Away at 95

In a heartfelt tribute to Cheung Kit, a 95-year-old Hong Kong resident and former rice dumpling vendor, mainland China's media outlets, including People's Daily, have highlighted his remarkable philanthropic endeavors. Cheung Kit, who recently passed away, lived a modest life, saving every penny he could.

Over the course of five decades, he donated a generous sum of 15 million Chinese yuan to his hometown of Xingyu in Zhejiang province. This substantial contribution resulted in the construction of 18 school buildings, 32 classrooms, and a library. Additionally, he established an education fund of over 2 million yuan to support underprivileged children, benefiting a significant number of students in Xingyu.

Cheung Kit's story is one of resilience and dedication. Born in Lianghu Town, Xingyu, he faced financial hardships from an early age and had to seek opportunities outside his hometown before completing primary school. Eventually, he settled in Hong Kong, where he started his entrepreneurial journey by selling rice dumplings from a stall in Tsim Sha Tsui. Despite his humble lifestyle, Cheung Kit's concern for his hometown never faltered. He understood the difficulties of poverty-induced education gaps and became deeply invested in improving the educational well-being of students in Xingyu.

Cheung Kit's involvement in supporting education in Xingyu began in 1979 when he donated a color television worth 3,000 yuan to a local secondary school. From then on, every time he returned to Xingyu, he made it a priority to visit schools and provide assistance to those in need. His contributions extended beyond financial support, as he funded the construction of school buildings, provided additional equipment, and fulfilled countless requests for assistance. His dedication and impact on education in Xingyu earned him immense love and respect from his fellow villagers.

On February 18, Cheung Kit passed away due to a heart attack. The news of his death deeply saddened his fellow villagers in Xingyu, who paid their respects by offering flowers and bowing in front of his old house in the Huaguang Community, Lianghu Town. Cheung Kit's philanthropic legacy will forever be cherished, as he has left a lasting impact on education in his hometown. His selfless acts of kindness and generosity have touched the hearts of many and serve as an inspiration to others.

Cheung Kit's life serves as a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others. His story will continue to inspire generations to come, highlighting the importance of giving back to one's community and the transformative power of education.
