A man who slapped a 13-year-old boy at an Islamic learning centre in Quarry Bay will be arraigned before the magistrate at Eastern Court on Monday.

His family has charged the 35-years- old man for causing an injury to the boy's eyes when being taught  Quran lessons.

He was allegedly charged with an assault, police reported on Saturday.

The incident was said to have happened last week but the man was apprehended on Friday after the family made a complaint to police on the 10th of August.

A source said that the boy has gone through six hours of surgery after an eye specialist discovered he had a detached retina with a 180-degree tear. The second operation would be arranged in the next six months.

Police said that the accused man had a recognisance form which is a temporary immigration document that disallows the holder to engage in any paid job in Hong Kong but can live.

In an interview, the sister of the boy stressed that the alleged assault should not be used to bolster stereotypes about her ethnic community as “Islam does not teach us all of this”. She said further that hoped that her family’s decision to speak out would “educate” parents that corporal punishment was wrong and illegal in Hong Kong.
