Pursue Your Dreams, Not Public Housing: Chief Executive John Lee's Advice to Hong Kong Youth

Hong Kong, 2024-07-17 - In a message to the city's youth, Chief Executive John Lee urged teenagers to focus on pursuing their dreams rather than solely relying on public housing. Lee emphasized that the potential rewards of following one's aspirations could vastly exceed the benefits of a public home.

"[They] should not have such a mindset," Lee said, acknowledging the importance of having a place to live, but stressing that youngsters should plan their lives based on their visions and ambitions. "I wish to build a Hong Kong that relies on families as the backbone. I believe you will have regrets if you waste your possibilities and dreams for just a public home."

The Chief Executive pointed out that an individual's ultimate achievements could be "100 times greater or even infinite" compared to what a public home can provide. He cited the example of a Hongkonger selected for the Chinese national space program, highlighting the city as a place where dreams can be realized.

Lee's remarks came after reporters inquired about a recent "lying flat" phenomenon, where some young people reportedly apply for public rental housing upon turning 18 and avoid seeking well-paying jobs to meet the income threshold. The Chief Executive firmly rejected this mindset, urging teenagers to pursue their passions and aspirations.

"Because it is very likely that your final achievements and results could be 100 times greater or even infinite compared to what a public home can bring to you," Lee emphasized.

The government, according to the Chief Executive, has been offering assistance to help teenagers purchase their own properties. Lee encouraged the youth to plan and develop their lives in line with their visions, reinforcing the belief that Hong Kong is a place where dreams can be pursued and realized.
