Singapore police have arrested a 54-year-old man who allegedly stole S$107,000 (US$80,000) inside a flight from Hong Kong to Singapore, the police said on Wednesday.
The man stole the money from one of the passengers aboard from the overhead baggage compartment and the owner could only find out after alighted from the plane at Changi Airport on Tuesday.
The flight records from Hong Kong were followed up by the airport police and in conjunction with the Singapore police force’s Commercial Affairs Department officers, the man’s identity could be determined.
It was discovered by the authorities that the man had made some remittance transactions of S$37,897.70, thought to be part of the stolen cash, at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown.
The report said that the man was thereafter trailed by the police, who stopped the transactions and arrested him. He was found to have S$79,662.83 cash in multiple denominations and currencies on him and seized by the police.
According to the authorities, the man will be charged in court on Thursday with theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code 1871 read with Section 3 of the Tokyo Convention Act 1971.
Section 3 of the Tokyo Convention Act 1971 allows offenders to be charged under Singapore laws if a crime takes place on a Singapore-controlled aircraft flying outside the country.
If found guilty, the man faces up to three years in jail, a fine, or both, it was said.
“Theft on board an aircraft is a serious offence,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police M Malathi, the commander of the Airport Police Division.
“The safety and security of all passengers is a top priority for Airport Police. Our swift actions in this case ensured that the perpetrator was apprehended and brought to justice. Airport Police will continue to work closely with our airport stakeholders to ensure aircraft security and safety.”
Singapore police force advised members of the public to advise the passengers not to place their cash or valuables in the plane's baggage compartment and wash out for any passenger who keeps opening the overhead luggage compartment and retrieving things.
The cabin crew should be informed right away if anyone is suspected of this behaviour.
