A senior police officer was attacked while jogging in Kowloon East

HONG KONG - Thomas Yu, Senior Superintendent of the Kowloon East Traffic Division of the Hong Kong Police Force, was attacked by a person with a mental disorder at around 1 pm today. The attack occurred on Shing Kai Road, Kai Tak.

Superintendent Yu was injured on the left bridge of his nose and forehead. However, the attacker was quickly captured by police on the sidewalk 200 meters away. The two parties involved were immediately sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.


The senior police officer was reportedly on a midday jog when the incident occurred. When he passed the footbridge near Tung Yun Garden on Prince Edward Road, he accidentally met the suspect. There had been no previous interaction or eye contact between them. Suddenly, the suspect punched Superintendent Yu and fled along Coordination Avenue towards Kowloon Bay.

Superintendent Yu acted quickly to report the incident and pursue the attacker, while another officer driving an undercover vehicle witnessed the attack. The police quickly got out of the car to assist and successfully captured the suspect on the sidewalk 200 meters away from the scene.


Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested persons may have suffered from a mental disorder as they were talking to themselves during the incident. The exact motive behind the attack is unclear. However, police are actively investigating the matter to establish the circumstances leading up to the attack.
