Indonesian Swindling Gang Apprehended at Airport After Targeting Elderly Victims

HONG KONG - Four individuals from an Indonesian swindling ring were arrested at an airport in Hong Kong while attempting to leave the country. The group had been involved in a series of thefts targeting elderly victims, amassing over HK$470,000 in ill-gotten gains. The arrests were made by the Kwai Chung District Special Duty Squad, Railway Response Team, and Airport Security Unit.

The investigation began when a local woman reported the theft of HK$25,000 from her backpack while waiting to deposit it at a bank on February 29th. Through the analysis of CCTV footage, the authorities were able to identify the four suspects who had been posing as tourists to carry out their crimes. The group employed various tactics, including distraction and concealment, to pickpocket their victims. In one instance, they managed to steal HK$100,000.

Further evidence linked the group to five additional pickpocketing cases that had taken place between October of the previous year and March of the current year in different locations across Hong Kong. The victims, with the oldest being 90 years old, had a total of approximately HK$475,200 stolen from them. The ongoing investigation has been taken over by the Kwai Tsing police.

The four Indonesian men, aged between 25 and 47, have been preliminarily charged with theft and are scheduled to appear in West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts. The police have issued a public appeal for vigilance, particularly in crowded areas, and have reminded citizens to secure their belongings. Theft is a serious offense in Hong Kong, and a conviction under Section 9 of the Hong Kong Theft Ordinance Cap 210 can carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from such criminal activities.
