In Taiwan, a 28-year-old man found himself in a predicament when he overslept and missed his intended stop on a train. Taking matters into his own hands, he decided to pull the emergency brake to get off the train.
According to reports from Taiwanese media, the incident occurred on February 2. The man, identified as Mr. Hsieh, was supposed to disembark at Taitung station but only woke up as the train was approaching Jinlun station.
Desperate to exit the train, Mr. Hsieh pulled the emergency brake, causing the train to abruptly halt at Jinlun station. CCTV footage provided by the railway operator captured the moment when Mr. Hsieh, situated in the ninth carriage, activated the emergency brake.
Unfortunately, his actions resulted in a delay for all the other passengers on board, who were required to disembark at Jinlun station and wait for the next train. The railway operator promptly reported the incident to the Taiwanese police, who identified Mr. Hsieh and summoned him for questioning at the police station.
During the interrogation, Mr. Hsieh explained that he believed pulling the emergency brake would notify the train conductor to stop the train, but he did not anticipate that it would come to a complete halt.
If found guilty, Mr. Hsieh could face a fine ranging from NT$10,000 ($430) to NT$1 million.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying alert while commuting and making use of appropriate channels to address any unforeseen circumstances.
