Tibet Earthquake Claims 126 Lives; China Allocates 200 Million Yuan for Relief Efforts

On January 7, 2025, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Tibet, resulting in at least 126 fatalities and leaving 188 individuals injured. The Chinese government has responded by mobilizing significant resources to prioritize rescue operations and ensure the safe relocation of affected communities as winter approaches.

According to data from the China Earthquake Networks Centre, the quake impacted several villages within a 5-kilometer radius, with an average elevation of around 4,259 meters. Preliminary assessments from the Hong Kong Observatory indicated a slightly higher magnitude of 7.1, with the epicenter located approximately 160 kilometers southwest of Shigatse, near the capital, Rikaze.
Local residents reported intense shaking during the earthquake, which led to disruptions in communication and power supplies in some areas. Rescue teams are facing challenging conditions, compounded by numerous aftershocks, as they work to assist those in need. Significant structural damage has been reported across various locations.
In response to the disaster, the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Ministry of Finance have each allocated 100 million yuan for disaster relief, totaling 200 million yuan to support rescue and recovery efforts in the affected regions. Various emergency response teams and resources are currently mobilized to provide aid and support to the impacted communities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also expressed condolences, urging a swift recovery for all those affected. As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on minimizing casualties and providing necessary assistance to those in distress.
