Tropical Storm Ampil Intensifies as Hong Kong Braces for Unsettled Weather

According to the latest updates from the Hong Kong Observatory, the city is set to experience unsettled weather in the coming days as Tropical Storm Ampil intensifies and a southwesterly airstream affects the region.

Tropical Storm Ampil, currently located approximately 240 kilometers west-northwest of Iwo Jima, Japan, is forecast to move north-northeast at around 12 kilometers per hour across the seas south of Japan. The storm is expected to gradually strengthen over the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, the southwesterly airstream is bringing showers and isolated thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong, including Hong Kong. Tonight and tomorrow, the weather in Hong Kong is expected to be mainly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms. The minimum temperature is forecast to be around 28 degrees Celsius tomorrow morning, with hot and sunny intervals during the day reaching a maximum of around 32 degrees Celsius in urban areas, and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories. Winds will be light to moderate from the southwest.

Looking ahead, the unsettled weather pattern is set to continue over the next few days. Occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected, with the possibility of heavy downpours on Friday. The influence of the southwesterly airstream and a broad trough of low pressure will bring heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to the coast of southern China in the latter part of this week, with the trough expected to linger over the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea early next week.

As Tropical Cyclone Ampil continues to intensify and move closer to the vicinity of the eastern part of Honshu, Japan, the weather situation in the region will remain closely monitored by the Hong Kong Observatory.
