The first Hong Kong hydrogen-powered bus began operation

Hong Kong’s first hydrogen-powered double-decker bus operated by Citybus Limited started the service on Sunday with many enthusiasts lining up as early as 3 am to catch up with the historical beginning.

People were raising their phones and some with placards at Muk On Street in Kai Tak to witness the new bus that worth HK$8 million, over US$1 million starting the first public service at 11 am which route along Kowloon City, Yau Tsim Mong and Sham Shui Po.

The general manager of the Citybus operations, Roger Ma Chim-wai said the new bus would make six to eight trips a day on Route 20 in its first month.

He said further that the refilling station is only located in Kowloon but the company hope to operate to serve the Hong Kong Island as well.

However, he said the hydrogen buses can not travel in the tunnel which is one of the limitations stated in the operating regulation.

The transportation company said it takes around 10 minutes to refuel and it can travel up to 400km or 249 miles.

The company said its 2045 target for a zero emissions fleet was five years before the government deadline for a carbon-neutral city.
